What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is not some spooky zombie-like state of the mind. Hypnosis is a very natural and normal state the mind enters into and out of several times a day. If you have driven somewhere familiar to you, and been unable to remember most of your trip, or how you got there so fast, you were in hypnosis. Anytime you have been engrossed in a television show or movie, and even shared emotion (sadness, fear, etc) with the characters you were in hypnosis. Hypnosis is simply a state of mind where you are completely focused on a single idea to the point that everything else is unable to distract you. Most people simply don’t know how to harness this ability to focus to make good use out of it. A hypnotist simply helps you develop that focus. A stage hypnotist will help you focus on a silly idea so you and the audience can have some fun. Consulting hypnotists can help you focus on change you may want to make in your life such as losing weight, stopping smoking or other habits, or even overcoming fears and phobias.

Is Hypnosis “Mind Control?”
Many people are afraid that a hypnotist will “make them” do things they don’t want to do. This is simply not true. A hypnotist does not control you. While in hypnosis you are completely aware of everything going on around you, you can hear the suggestions of ideas or change the hypnotist is giving you, and you decide to accept or reject those things. Many think they hypnotist has some type of control over his subjects because they have seen people act silly at a stage hypnosis show and believe they would never do that unless the hypnotist were forcing them as if they were puppets. What you must remember is the people who volunteer to go up on stage in front of a room full of people are the kind of personalities that don’t mind accepting fun suggestions and simply having a good time even if people are watching.

Can I be hypnotized?
Anybody of normal intelligence can be hypnotized. Hypnotism is about the ability to focus on a single idea. Anyone willing to allow the hypnotist to help them eliminate distractions and focus their mind will find that they very quickly and easily enter the state which is called “hypnosis.” It was once believed that only a certain percentage of people were capable of being hypnotized. That was true at a time where the understanding about hypnosis and techniques used were very limited. Now science understands much more about hypnosis and we know that anyone can experience it if they want to.

Can I “get stuck” in Hypnosis? It is not possible to be “stuck” in hypnosis. Since hypnosis is about the elimination of distractions and focusing of the mind on a single idea, if the hypnotist stops guiding the subject, or decides to just walk away and leave the subject in a trance state, it would be only a few brief moments before the subject loses focus and welcomes the normal distractions of the world back into their mind. They would come out of trance very quickly and go on about their business.

What does Hypnosis feel like? Hypnosis doesn’t really “feel like” anything. In some cases people are extremely relaxed while in hypnosis. For them, they experience whatever they feel like when they’re relaxed. For some they might feel light, as if floating. Others feel very heavy as if sinking through the chair. Many times hypnosis is not relaxation at all. (Think of the people up on stage singing, dancing, and running around.) Some report that it is like being in a dream, where you know what’s going on but most of it doesn’t make sense. Whatever if “feels like,” almost everyone reports that they enjoy it very much. So go on, give it a try!
